Professor Jan Karski Scholarship Fund Established in D.C.

Professor Jan Karski, who risked his life in WWII as a secret messenger to maintain communication between the Polish underground and the Polish Government-in-Exile and to alert the Allies about the mass killings of the Jews in German-occupied Poland, pledged $100,000 to establish a scholarship fund under the aegis of the American Center of Polish Culture, on the condition that his donation be matched by $100,000 from other donors.

Twenty thousand dollars have already been raised for that purpose at the Center's Testimonial Dinner in October 1998. Once the funds are matched, the scholarship fund will make grants to students from Poland to support their study in the U.S. According to the Center's Jonathan Starzyk, the applicants will be able to choose any study topic, but they will have to demonstrate commitment to the ideals and goals that Jan Karski has fought for.

Donations could be send to The Professor Jan Karski Scholarship Fund, c/o The American Center of Polish Culture, 2025 O Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036. Information: (202) 785-2320.
